I have been a helper for several years in a dance class with children with disabilities. I recently became an assistant teacher and am working with ages 6-18+ in vocal and dance classes. I have also been a camp counselor for art and vocal camps.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Helping them be creative, whether that is through art or dance or making up a new game. I like to be in nature , so it is fun to find activities to do outdoors.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Being able to make the kids feel comfortable. I can imagine it’s weird having a new person come into your home and tell you what to do. My goal is to make sure they are having fun while staying safe.
My experience with special needs children...
I have a disability myself, fragile bones, so I have been around many people with disabilities my entire life. I am not as fragile as I once was, but I am grateful for my disability as it introduced me to so many people. I danced with the children with disabilities when I was younger and when I got into high school, I began helping with the younger group. I am now the assistant teacher, but I still help with the group and I am a helper with the adult group and vocal group. I love it.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I kept one of my friend’s babies overnight a few months ago. It was the first time he had been without her for the whole night. He had some trouble sleeping, but eventually did, and when he woke up, all he wanted to do was cuddle. It was the sweetest thing. I texted her a picture and she said he loves morning cuddles.
