Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love turning everything into a learning experience. I think children need to get a little dirty and be a part of things. I teach them about the environment, by going outside and looking, touching, exploring the world around them. I teach them math by letting them measure and count while we bake cookies or prepare dinner. I teach them the beauty of art and music by letting them draw, paint, sculpt, play with musical instruments, and listen to all types of music. I teach them the importance of exercise by dancing, running, jumping and playing. I teach them how to identify the emotions they are feeling, how to express their emotions in healthy ways, and that it's okay to be sad, angry, scared, or anxious. Most of all, when I am with them, they LEARN that they are the most important thing to me and I will keep them safe.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Being a nanny is such an important job and should not be taken lightly. Someone is handing over their most precious creation. The family is trusting that you will not only keep their child safe, but also be patient and kind to that little one. Many of the children that we care for have not yet developed the ability to fully express their thoughts and emotions. Some may speak very well, but are still easily intimidated by adults. I truly understand these issues and the importance of creating an environment where children are not only well taken of, but are encouraged to talk to their parents about the time we spend together. I also feel that it is important for your nanny to keep documentation of all medical issues the child may have, along with your emergency plan. I always keep log of the day for the parent when they return home.
My experience with special needs children...
After I completed my Master's Degree in Counseling, I began teaching at a specialized school for ADHD students, ran by Neuropsychologists. I knew what it was like to raise a child that was so smart, but always seemed to be in trouble at school. I also saw many children that I didn't think fit that diagnosis and I started looking more at what was causing the negative behaviors we often saw in the classrooms. This led me to start working with abused children. I found that many children in our Foster Care system were mis-diagnosed with ADHD and put on stimulant medications. Most of these children were actually suffering from PTSD and the medications only increased the anxiety, and fear they were experiencing. Our educators were often handed behavior assessments without any background on the trauma the child experienced, leading to ADHD and Oppositional Defiant diagnosis. Last year I returned to the classroom, and my students range from Autism Spectrum Disorder to ADHD and more.
The most important part about being a nanny...
When a child smiles at me and I see in their little face that they feel safe and loved. Sometimes, this takes a while, but I understand that it can be scary to have someone new taking care of them.
