What matters most about being a nanny to me is caring for children. I had a hard time growing up and didn’t get the care that I needed, so one of my favorite things to do is spend time with kids and take care of them. Giving my free time to families who may need me makes me feel important.
My experience with special needs children...
I was a teacher’s assistant in special needs classes where I was required to teach lower math, reading, organizational skills, social skills, and I had to be able to think quickly in escalated situations. I also have special needs family members who I’ve cared for as well.
The most important part about being a nanny...
When I was a teacher’s assistant, there was a little girl who took a liking to me. She always had trouble connecting with people but she would follow me around wherever I went. One day after getting escalated from a task she didn’t understand, instead of reacting negatively, she came to me and traced the lines on the palms of my hands until she calmed down. From then on, that was one of her main coping skills when she would get escalated.
