A little bit about me

Hiii! My name is Terry Mokaya and I’m a high school student graduating early this fall. I’ll have my diploma by then and am currently working toward getting my second permit, though DMV appointments are backed up. I’ve been an active aunt since I was 10 (now 17, turning 18 in January), and I love caring for children, cooking, and creating fun ways to keep them engaged.

I was born and raised in Kenya until 2018, and I value kindness, family, and faith. As a Christian, I strive to love and serve others like Christ did. I hope to save up for a car and support my community back home. I’m also passionate about science—especially chemistry and biology—and I want to work in medicine and develop natural, safe hair products for Afro-textured hair.

I love doing hands-on activities like arts and crafts, storytelling, and baking simple treats together. I also enjoy outdoor play—like going for walks, playing tag, or doing obstacle courses. I try to make every moment engaging and full of joy while still keeping things safe and structured.

The most important part about being a nanny...

To me, the most important part about being a nanny is making a child feel safe, loved, and understood. It’s not just about watching over them—it’s about being present, patient, and creating a space where they can grow, express themselves, and feel valued. Children remember how you made them feel, and I believe it’s a huge honor to be trusted with that role. Being a nanny means showing up with love, consistency, and care every single day.

My experience with special needs children...

I was still quite young when I first helped care for a child with special needs, but it was a meaningful experience that taught me a lot. I wasn’t alone—my mum, who used to be a caregiver, guided me through it and made sure I was doing everything safely and with love. I learned the importance of patience, routine, and making sure the child felt heard and supported. Even at that age, I knew how important it was to be kind, gentle, and understanding.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my favorite moments was when I was watching my niece, and we spent the afternoon making “potions” out of safe kitchen ingredients like flour, food coloring, and water. She called it our “science lab,” and we laughed so much while learning about textures and colors. Later, she told me it was the best day ever. Moments like that remind me how meaningful it is to create fun memories that also encourage learning and imagination. It made me realize just how much I love being part of a child’s growth and happiness.
