A little bit about me

Hi! My name is Tori Ortiz and I am a 20 year old junior at Texas State University. I am currently studying early childhood education and plan on being an elementary school teacher. I am from the Houston area. I’ve lived there my whole life up until moving to San Marcos for school in August of 2024. I have plenty of experience in childcare. I worked as a gymnastics coach in high school for two years as well as a pre school teacher for 3 months over summer. I am the eldest of four siblings. I have an 18 yr old brother, 12 yr old sister and 4 yr old brother. My siblings are my life! They truly are my biggest blessings! I enjoy reading, spending time with family/friends, shopping, cooking, and absolutely love the outdoors!

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I absolutely love the outdoors! Swimming, walks, going to the park, etc. I believe spending time outdoors is absolutely great for children and always such a great time.

I also love arts and crafts! Coloring, painting, small and fun projects, you name it!

I’m also studying early childhood education at Texas State University and have learned lots of fun learning activities and skills to do with young children as well.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I have a few things that I believe to be important in being a nanny. First definitely being safety. Safety is and will always be my first priority with children. Knowing their allergies, medications they may take, how to prevent accidents, and what to do if an accident occurs are very important. I am CPR and first aid certified. I chose to get certified in both of these because you just never know when you’ll need the skills. Being certified could save a life. Another thing I think is very important is balancing fun with learning. It can be easy for babysitters to be “too fun” or lazy and just throw on a show for the kids to be distracted. I believe it’s important for children to feel involved and included. I would want to try to incorporate learning every day! Keep a fun and entertaining environment for children, but also a little bit of structure!

My experience with special needs children...

I have a little sister (currently is 12) who has mild autism. Growing up, I’ve learned how to cater to her specific needs and be there for her in every way she needs me to. She can be non-verbal frequently, so learning how to communicate with her was something I learned pretty early on. I’ve taken the time to really understand her and how she thinks which has helped our relationship immensely!

The most important part about being a nanny...

Definitely being lucky enough to have my younger siblings. Babysitting them truly was the best. It never felt like a chore or something I did to help out my parents, but it was so incredibly fun. I started babysitting my youngest brother when he was just 2 months old! Growing up with him while also having a big part in raising him is an experience I’ll forever be grateful for. In some ways, he feels like my baby too lol! I just feel so connected to my siblings, in a way I believe wouldn’t be as strong without the opportunity to care for them the way I did in high school. It was so rewarding.
