Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I was a day camp counselor for two summers where I supervised 20 2nd and 3rd grade students.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Writing and acting out stories, building cool gadgets with legos (most recent assignment there were 3 boys who loved legos!), playing dress up, freeze tag, hide and go seek, swimming and arts and crafts. The last two families I have worked with allowed zero/almost zero screen time so I am used to keeping children active away from screens.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I have always been very mindful of the emotional health and wellbeing of children. Aside from fulfilling the duties in my role, I believe my best contribution to a family is to support the emotional-mental-spiritual health of the children, as directed by the parents.
My experience with special needs children...
I cared for three children for four days while their parents were out of the country. One of the children was a 5-year-old who was nonverbal, as such he couldn't be left alone. I also cared for his two sisters aged 2 and 8. It was challenging but very rewarding.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I had a one-time assignment caring for an eight-year-old boy and based on a phone call from a close family member I could tell in every interaction he had he was likely always criticized. That night when we were playing with a cardboard car and he had it turned backwards instead of correcting him I said, "What a fun idea. Let's do it this way!" As I was leaving the Dad ran out to the car and said to me, "My son just told me he had the best night of his life." My goal in every interaction is to add value to those I come into contact with, especially children.
