Having a strong bond with the kid/s you look after. They should respect you as an adult but also see you as a friend who wants to play and have fun with them.

My experience with special needs children...

While working at an overnight summer camp and as a swim instructor, I worked with multiple special needs children, many of them being on the spectrum. I quickly gained an understanding of the needs of each child, was able to form a bond with them, and help them work through many situations with understanding and compassion.
