I have personal experience supporting family members with autism, including my cousin and my nephew. Growing up, my family often commented on how naturally patient and understanding I was with my cousin, especially during moments when she became overwhelmed, such as losing a favorite toy or navigating social situations.
My nephew is nonverbal and communicates in his own unique ways. I’ve learned to be patient, attentive, and responsive to his needs, helping him through moments of frustration and emotional overwhelm. These experiences have taught me the importance of empathy, consistency, and adapting my approach to each child’s individual needs. While my experience is personal rather than professional, it has given me valuable insight into supporting children with different communication styles and sensory or emotional needs.
