My experience with kids started at a very young age when my little sisters were born. The experience did not just stop with little sisters though. When I was nine, I became a mothers helper. This meant that I would spend a couple hours each day caring for the child so the mother could work around the house or at her in home office. Once I became old enough to babysit without adult supervision I began babysitting during the school year and nannying in the summer. I have handles up to six children at a time ranging from newborns to pre-teens. Aside from babysitting and nannying I have gained child care experience through volunteering at my church. I have volunteered in many areas ranging from working in the nursery and caring for multiple infants at a time, to being a dorm leader for eleven elementary age girls. I absolutely love working with children and have gained much experience over the years.

I recently just arrived back in California after being an au pair in Zurich, Switzerland. My experience in Switzerland was wonderful. I watched the children daily from 4pm-9pm, and as they were 8 and 11 years old they did not need much minding. However, I was there more to speak to them in English than to "watch them." When they came home from school I prepared a healthy snack, talked with them about their day, and then helped them with their homework. We then went outside and played soccer, threw a frisbee around, or played hide and seek around the neighborhood. I tried to keep a very active, healthy lifestyle with them.. I think I only watched a movie with them only twice the entire summer. We loved being active! Whenever the parents were gone, as they had meetings and outings, I watched them as well in the night or weekends. We usually prepared dinner together (which was very fun to prepare Swiss food and American food) ate dinner together, and then made a dessert and just talked and laughed in English. We then read, listened to music, and then went to bed. I never had any problems with discipling them when they needed it, which was very nice. They were children and did need it sometimes!

I started learning to care for babies when I was 5 years old, working in the church nursery. From the time I was 11 years old I started babysitting for various families and events. I have always enjoyed working with children and families, so pursued a university degree in Family Development. For two years, I would babysit a family of 8 children ages 3-13, the youngest with physical disabilities. Upon completing my degree, I was a live-in nanny for a family of 4 children ages 6 months to 8 years old. I lived with them for 3 months until I moved to Africa to do mission work. While in Africa I had the opportunity to volunteer at the local orphanage each week, working with infants and children up to 6 years in age.

I have been highly involved with babysitting throughout my life involving my younger sister and various families, and was also a nanny for a summer for the care of two children. With my knowledge of how different age groups of children tend to be I am able to direct specific attention to their needs and aspirations. In a previous job for AmeriCorps I was put in charge of the care of children varying from ages four to twelve. I am not one to just sit around doing nothing, I enjoy constant activity and socializing. As much as I love having fun I still understand the importance of maintaining somewhat strict boundaries and rules according to the family's lifestyle. I will not tolerate unruly or disrespectful behavior and deal with each situation as it comes and consequences that will best suit them.
