When I first turned 18, I started babysitting for a family friend. That started out with child who was 2.That job turned into a live in nanny position. I worked for her for 5 years ending with 3 kids from 1 to 7. I did laundry, I cooked, I cleaned, I got the kids ready for school, I took them to school, I did diaper changes and nap time. I helped them with homework, I really did it all! Then I took a small break from nannying. When I came back I worked the summer of 2015 for a family with 2 kids, 11 and 5. That was from June until August. That time we really just did lunch and lots of outdoor activities and park time. Finally I just ended my time with another family. I was with them for a year and a month. They have a 6, 4, and 1 and a half year old. I was doing the kids laundry, lunches, school drop off and pick up, doctors appointments, and for about 6 months I was also their cleaning lady one day out of the week without having childcare duties.

Hello, my name is Sara and I am 19 years old with lots of experience with children of all ages. I started out as a mother's helper when I was nine and started babysitting when I was twelve. This past Summer I took on a job as a nanny for 4-year old triplets till they started school in the Fall. They still have me babysit as needed. I am very comfortable and competent with all ages, even newborns. My mother was a childbirth educator/doula for the majority of my life, and I often accompanied her to home births to take care of the older children and help out after the baby was born. I also tagged along on postpartum visits. I have taken CPR a total of three times since I was ten and am confident in my ability to perform if needed. I am very patient and compassionate. I love children, and am very affectionate. I can and will accomplish everything expected of me to the best of my ability.

What are some common responsibilities for nannies in Elgin, IL?

As a parent, it’s natural for you to ask your nanny for a little extra help around the house. However, the boundaries for a nannies duties vary from person to person. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met. This includes things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active, that they have a healthy diet and a sanitary home. When tasks go beyond child care, for example scrubbing kitchen counters, folding laundry, gathering groceries, or teaching a language, you will likely need to provide additional compensation.

How can I ensure I have a great relationship with my nanny?

To start, it’s important you set expectations and are aligned on compensation from day one. This includes outlining vacation days, a protocol for sick days, and everything else you would want your own employer to cover. From here, spend time getting to know them. Take your nanny out one of Elgin’s great restaurants, learn about their childhood, and discuss your parenting philosophy. Finally, be sure to resolve conflicts as they arise. Open communication is crucial to ensuring a healthy long-term relationship.
