I worked with a 2-year-old for two summers and he made drastic improvements in his speech. I also nannied for a family with six kids who, when I started had three kids less than 3 years old. I nannied for them for three years. I tutored a kindergartener and helped him improve the equivalent of three letter grades in about four months in reading. I have also nannied and tutored a boy who had autism for 4 years, starting when he was and he is also showing improvements, academically, socially and behaviorally. Currently I nanny for a family with a 9 year old girl and a 14 year old girl who has special needs. A lot of children with special needs do not like to try new things, but I have been working with her a lot on trying things outside of her comfort zone. And her younger sister, struggles with feeling like she is getting the attention she needs, so I have been working with her on accepting and even embracing her situation as it is. Currently I also tutor for another family who have a 5 year old boy and 7 and 9 year old girls. With all three children we talk a lot about conflict resolution. With the 5 year old boy we are working on counting objects, number recognition and writing. And letter and sound recognition and writing. When I started he was not able to consistently able to count to 20 or even 10, and the one number he skipped every single time was 15, now he is able to consistently able to count to 20, including 15. The 7 year old is writing a very creative story about a mouse, she is also working on spelling words, and reading comprehension. The 9 year old is working on a research project about red pandas, through that, she is learning to use a computer, do research, read articles, summarize and put the articles into her own words, write, and practice punctuation. The kids are always excited when I come over, I like to make learning fun, I use their interests, games, lots of enthusiasm and engagement and positive reinforcement. If needed I use natural consequences, I let the kids know their expectations upfront and I am very good at staying calm under all circumstances.
