The most important part about being a nanny is building a trusting and loving relationship with the child and their family. Kids need to feel safe, supported, and understood in order to grow and thrive. That means being patient, consistent, and really tuning in to their individual needs—whether it’s offering comfort during tough moments, encouraging their independence, or simply being a positive, steady presence in their day.

As a nanny, you’re not just a caregiver—you’re a role model, a helper, and sometimes even part of the child’s extended family. That kind of trust is something I take seriously and treat with care.

My experience with special needs children comes from raising my daughter, who is 3 years old and autistic. One of my favorite nanny moments was helping a little boy who struggled with separation anxiety at drop-off. I started creating a little “morning routine” just for him—something simple like picking out a book together, doing a short breathing activity, and then choosing a toy to play with. After a week, he started walking in with a smile, excited for his little routine.
