Relevant experience where I also cared for children were…I've had experience in a variety of caregiving settings, including in medical homes for high need individuals, as well as more traditional classroom/summer camp settings.
Activities I enjoy doing with children…I absolutely love arts and crafts, learning music and singing and dancing along, as well as other more traditionally creative activities - but I also really have so much fun getting outside and doing more physical activities like playing sports and games!
The most important part about being a nanny…Is being the kind of person you wish you had around when you were a kid. I am so lucky to have had great older siblings and adults around me who were always so kind and never condescending (a key!) when they would spend time with me, and I think often about the qualities that made them such positive forces in my upbringing. They were patient with me and put themselves in my shoes, and were able to get excited about the things I was excited about, and engage in such a meaningful way. As a nanny, that's the sort of effect I want to leave.
My experience with special needs children…I have worked with several special needs children and cannot tell you how wonderful the experience has been. I really thrive in situations where I can work with a child on something difficult, and be a calm and understanding presence. Working with kids with sensory processing disorders and others on the spectrum, as well as children with physical disabilities has given me so many opportunities to do just that, for a group of kids whose unique challenges are too often written off or forgotten about.
My favorite nanny moment…I recently got a video from a family I used to work for, featuring a sweet boy (who has gotten so big since I last saw him!!) sharing his excitement over the 25th anniversary of Blue's Clues, a show I introduced him to and loved very much as a child, myself. Can't tell you how choked up I got!
