I’m a nanny because I genuinley enjoy working with children and I find that working as an au pair gives you a unique opportunity to be part of a family rather than just an employee. I also love the opportunity to travel and experience another culture in a way that most people don't have the chance to do.

My past childcare experience I worked for a wonderful family in Austria who have two little girls, Catie and Caroline. Catie was almost two and Caroline was 4 months when I first worked for the family. Originally the job was only for one month to give Catie a chance to spend time around a native English speaker and to give mum a month at work. But I have since been back five times to work for them and three just to visit and the whole family have visited me in Scotland too. In the summer I took the kids strawberry picking, swimming in the lake, out on bicycle rides, and on trips into the city. In the winter we tried sledding, ski-ing, and building snowbears! In Scotland I looked after a 4 year old and a newborn for a friend of mine to give her some time to organise the house or just chill out! 4-year-old Leah asked me questions that sometimes challenge my intelligence! She is very bright and nearly always smiling. When I was looking after only her we would often go for a hot chocolate as a special treat and read the latest Julia Donaldson or Dr Suess book. Her newborn sister obviously spent most of her time eating and sleeping but she was generally a very contented baby and I enjoyed the opportunity to watch her grow. In my part-time au pair position I looked after 4 year old Tristram, 2.5 y/o Tara and 1 y/o Elliot. They live on a working farm so we spent much of our time outdoors picking the fruit, watching the tractors, or playing in the mud! I am currently an au pair for a family with two children, a 6.5 year-old boy and a 2 year-old girl, in Alaska, USA. I started at the end of July 2006 and intend to stay with them until the end of July 2007. My main responsibilities are getting Drake ready for school, looking after Phoebe while he is at school, collecting Drake from school, and looking after both of them some evenings/weekends and during school holidays. The family has a flexible schedule so I work different hours each day/week. Phoebe and I attend a lot of community based activites for toddlers including storytime at the local library, toddler time at the local sports hall, and swimming at the local pool. Phoebe and I also spend some time outside each day (unless the temperature is below minus 20F). The family have one dog and I am responsible for feeding her/walking her occasionally. I don't do housework for the family but I load/unload the dishwasher and help keep the children's play areas tidy. I've also worked as an outdoor education instructor, classroom aid, playworker on a childrens hospital ward, and a childrens worker for a charity working with children with special needs.

Additional comments I must go through an agency in order to keep my visa.
