I’m a nanny because I am going to school to become an Elementary school teacher so I like to spend my summers with children to gain more experience. I also just enjoy being around children.

My past childcare experience This will be my third summer as a nanny. One year I cared for an 8-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl. Because they were older, I was mostly there to keep the peace in the house, feed them, take them to friends’ houses or the pool, and take them to sports practices. The second year I cared for 3-year-old and 5-year-old boys. I got them up and dressed in the morning, fed them, potty trained the 3 year old, helped the 5-year-old learn how to ride a bike, took them to the pool and helped them swim, took them to swim and golf lessons, took them to museums and to the aquarium, the boys had daily workbooks that I helped them through, and frequently stayed later then the usual time so that the parents could have date nights. Last summer, for about a month, I left my full time nanny job to go to another family’s house to watch 2 out of the three kids while their mom took the third to practice every night. Her husband is military and he was deployed at the time. She needed those 2-3 hours to be able to take the oldest to his football practice and have some time for herself instead of worrying about the two younger kids (ages 2 and 4).

Additional comments Because I am going to school to be an Elementary teacher, I understand how important it is that kids spend their summers having fun outside as much as possible but that it is also just as important for them to continue learning so that they are ready when it is time for the school year to start back up. With that being said, learning needs to be fun and there are many ways that learning can be incorporated into fun activities that the children will not even realize they are doing something academic. These activities will vary upon age but some of them involve baking, board games, and “Work books” that I have that consist of puzzles and various activities that the boys I cared for last summer loved. The workbooks were individualized based on their abilities and they included stickers and certificates so there was an incentive to do well and finish them. Each time one of them finished something they couldn’t wait to color the certificate and show it off to their parents. Other activities include going to any of the various museums in the Hampton Roads area and the aquarium.
