They both run family businesses in different cities, and because of this, we traveled extensively. The children had been used to traveling at least once a month, and though the schedule eased as Lilly got older and higher in the school system, we still traveled several times a year. My duties therefore changed from place to place. When we were in Ohio, I was responsible for transportation to and from activities, as well as planning and coordinating activities, keeping in contact with teachers and coordinating schoolwork for when we traveled, as well as light housework, laundry, grocery shopping, some cooking, scheduling and attending doctor's visits, planning other activities when time allowed and pet care. When we are in Philadelphia, I am responsible for leading school with the children (involving lesson planning from learning how to tell time and how to read, to studying insects and bugs, to learning about the continents, as well as fun activities that keep the children fascinated with learning) laundry, keeping kids area's neat and getting them out of the house for the many many activities that are available in the area. When we were visiting family in California or South Carolina, my main responsibility was keeping the children's space neat, and keeping up with their laundry, as well as occasional babysitting and pet care. I also had the joy of helping them choose, purchase and train a puppy. The Friels are wonderful people, and leaving them will be difficult, but knowing what I am good at and not good at, and knowing what this position will require come fall, I know that moving on to other employment is a good decision. Full Time Nanny, I was responsible for Childcare and some Household Management chores. I helped with doctor visits and sorting through last seasons clothes. I have enjoyed helping these children learn such varied things as A, B, C’s, potty training, and how to dress themselves. Though I have to leave for financial reasons we still maintain a good relationship and will continue to be friends. Full Time Nanny, Sara hired me in 2001 as a nanny for her two children Connor (then age 5) and Abby (then age 2). As a busy doctor, she was in need of someone to help manage her busy life and provide another caring presence in her children’s lives. I was responsible for the daily care and comfort of both children. In the p year before I left, she and her husband started a clinic and added a new baby to the family! Because of the success of the clinic, neither parent needs to work the long hours that created a need for my services. We have parted on the best of terms and still remain in friendly contact. I learned so much from this job!! I learned the joy of working with someone who supported me and cared for me. I learned the value of saying yes. I learned how to let kids know that you valued their input and make sure to use that input in the day to day workings of the house and I have seen the kids’ self esteem just blossom when I use this day by day. Preschool Ministry Assistant, Church I was responsible for the recruiting, management, and motivation of volunteers; administration of budgets and curriculum; and planning special events for the ministry. During this position, I had to study how children this age learn and learn what is the most effective way to reach them. I still remain passionate about teaching children through today. Childcare Provider, Bill and his wife often used my services as a babysitter for their family when he and his wife wanted a weekend away or when they were attending other daylong activities. I used my ability to entertain kids during this job. It was important with this family to distract the kids from the fact their parents were gone and to do it effectively over long periods of time. I used everything from crafts or games to new movies or trips to exciting places. I enjoyed babysitting them as much as the kids enjoyed having me because I kept busy keeping them busy and we all had a great time. OTHER EXPERIENCE Counselor Camp (ages 5-10 yrs.) most of the summer was spent with the horseback camps. Learned how to manage time, do crafts, ride horses, entertain over long period of time; Learned the value of distractions, and how to get kids to eat. Counselor Child (ages 3-12 yrs.) Learned storytelling skills, time management, how to manage others, and the value of hard work. (3 yr. old class) Learned about schedules, time outs, how children learn, and the value of a system of discipline, of teamwork, and of play in learning.
