Is open communication and the ability to work with others. It's very important to be on the same page with the parents as it will create a strong sense of trust and respect. The child will feel more comfortable when seeing that there is a good connection with a mutual understanding that the child's growth and successes are top priority.
My experience with special needs children...
My experience with special needs children makes up about 20 percent of the children I have cared for. I am not afraid of taking on special needs as I believe everyone is unique in their own way. The way I learn about any child is by observing and getting to know them as an individual. I have a 24 year old daughter who was born legal blind and it was not really any different from a child with no special needs. I treat each child as a unique individual who has likes and dislikes and I get to know the whole child.

I love being part of that family and staying in their lives even after the children are taking care of themselves.
