Having so many of my own children I spent most of my time volunteering in classrooms. Head start, youth groups, sunday/wednesday night church nursery. I have been a licensed home daycare provider for several years specializing in special needs children and/or non traditional days and hours.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Everyday life is an activity with children as they absorb so much so fast. Cooking, coloring, reading, outdoor games. It doesn't so much matter what as long as they are engaged and fun.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Is being an extension of the child's parents in respect to consistency. Communicate openly with parents so the children aren't confused. Rules and expectations should not change because the adult is different. Always be patient.
My experience with special needs children...
My own son was speech / language impaired making finding childcare for him very difficult. Because of this I had my own in-home daycare for special needs children. My experience with the autism spectrum was both high functioning and rote / instinctive behaviors. I am experienced with physical disabilities like Cerebral Palsy and failure to thrive.
