My experience with special needs children...
I have babysat overnight for young children with autism, and provided longer term care for a child with ADHD and anxiety while his mother recovered from surgery. In Texas I was repeatedly invited to substitute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing kindergarten and mixed-grade elementary classes. I do not know very much ASL but the interpreters all said I communicated very well with the students.

During recess, if I notice a kid feeling isolated from the others, I play with them and give that positive attention. It draws the other kids to come play with the isolated student, and I have watched kids’ relationships evolve with one another over time
