Hi, I am Samantha! I am a college student studying Child Development, Psychology, and Neuroscience at the University of San Diego with a 3.8 GPA, a lifelong Coloradan who grew up exploring everything this state has to offer, a dog mom to five, a swimmer, a musician, someone who is genuinely passionate about health and nutrition and loves to cook, and a person who believes pretty firmly that kids should be outside and off screens as much as humanly possible. I have spent the last four years teaching swimming and working with kids of all ages and abilities, I hold an active Lifeguard Certification with CPR, AED, and First Aid training, and I have a deep love for animals, adventure, and the kind of hands-on, creative, get-outside-and-do-something approach to life that I try to bring into everything I do.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

My most substantial childcare experience comes from four years of teaching swimming at a swim school in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, where I worked with up to 53 kids a week across all ages and abilities, including children with disabilities and special needs, building individual relationships with each of them and tailoring my approach to every child's unique needs and learning style. Through that work I also developed ongoing babysitting relationships with several swim families, giving me experience caring for kids in a home setting with families I had already built trust with.
I am currently working at the Portland Jewish Community Center as an instructor and lifeguard, where I continue to work with children in a structured and supervised environment on a regular basis. This role has kept my skills sharp and my certifications current while also giving me continued hands-on experience engaging with kids of varying ages and backgrounds in a professional setting.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Swimming, hiking, exploring the mountains, cooking and baking together, arts and crafts, reading, visiting the zoo, aquarium, and local farms, nature walks, trips to the park, gardening, outdoor games, and basically anything that gets kids outside, moving, and away from a screen and into the world around them.

My experience with special needs children...

Through four years of swim instruction I have had the privilege of working with children across a wide range of needs and abilities, including Down syndrome, autism, ADHD, ADD, anxiety, depression, attachment issues, fear-based responses, neurodivergent learners, children with missing limbs, cerebral palsy, mobility limitations, and various birth defects. Working with these kids taught me how to read each child as an individual, adapt my approach on the fly, build trust slowly and intentionally, and create an environment where every child feels safe, capable, and celebrated regardless of what they are working with or working through.
