I’ve been a live-in nanny before, ages ranged from 5 to 13.
I’ve worked as a camp counselor, where I worked with foster youth and boys and girls ages 7 to 16. I was charged with getting 12 girls under 10 years old up, showered, dressed and ready for breakfast by 7:00am. I was dance instructor at camp and enjoy entertaining kids and getting them to be active.

I will play and make up games, play tag, bike, go on outings, play on the jungle gym in the park. I will never be one of the nannies sitting on the bench looking at their phone while the kids play on their own.

is being present. That means paying attention so that they’re safe, but also it means being mindful of their needs, acknowledging their questions, respecting them as people and helping them form a positive view of themselves and the world.

One of the best compliments I received as a nanny was from my boss whose friends saw me playing in the park with her son and his friend and asked if she’d hired a personal trainer to help get her son more active, and if they could get my number. I realized most nannies don’t play ball at the park with the kids.
