A little bit about me

Hello! My name is Mari and my pronouns are they/he/she. I'm currently a Skills Trainer at Trillium Family Services where I help children develop social and emotional skills in a residential mental health facility. Before my current job I worked as a full time nanny of a 2-year-old & a 6-month-old for a year and half. Before that I had many roles as a preschool teacher's assistant, substitute, daycare teacher, and a camp counselor. I have worked with kids from many different backgrounds, settings, and age groups. Overall, I have about 5 years of experience as a professional child care provider.
When I’m not working, I love doing art and being outside. I'm a true kid at heart & I love planning innovative and stimulating activities for my students to do. More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I currently work with children ages 5-18 in a behavioral health setting at Trillium Family Services. There I focus on teaching emotional regulation and developing lifelong skills through therapeutic interventions and trauma-informed care. The job I had before that was at Multnomah Early Childhood Program as an early childhood developmental specialist, where I assisted in an inclusive special education preschool. I worked in a classroom with around 10 kids ages 3-5 with a variety of neurodiversities, needs, and learning levels. Before that I was a full time nanny for a year and half, where I looked after a 2-year-old and 6-month-old and helped with common chores and daily household tasks. Prior to that I was a preschool teacher assistant among other things at West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science for about 2 years.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I enjoy organizing crafts and letting kids explore their creative side. I also enjoy setting up fun activities to do outside to let out their energy and explore the outdoors.

My experience with special needs children...

At my past job I worked with a variety of children with different learning/social disabilities. I learned so much from them and made sure that the classroom was a place for all kids to learn and grow. I am familiar with different communication styles such as sign language, ACC devices for nonverbal communication for neurodivergent kids and kids with speech delays. I really enjoy being able to support them in a classroom setting, and would look forward to working with special need children in the future.
At my current job as a skills trainer I continue to work with children with a variety of special needs and mental illnesses. My job focuses on supporting kids to develop skills to help heal from the trauma they've endured, providing a safe and empowering space to do so, and showing up for them as a safe, compassionate adult along the way.

The most important part about being a nanny...

There are so many to choose from; I think that is what makes this job so incredibly rich and fulling. I started nannying for my past family when their child was nine months old, and when I left when she had just turned two. My favorite moments were seeing her reach big milestones like learning to walk, learning her first few words, and seeing her first dance moves.
To be there to support her family as she continued to grow and become her best toddler self was truly a sacred and special experience. Those little day-to-day moments were truly my favorites.
