My experience with special needs children...
I have worked one on one with mainly Autistic children from ages 3-7 but do have experience with older Autistic children as well. I have experience with non verbal children, and have experience with both communication boards and other devices. I have worked with special needs children in home environments as well as in a classroom setting.
The most important part about being a nanny...
One little boy I watched last summer, we would go swimming every morning together and we would count the birds passing by. Well one day a bird landed really close to us and he very excitedly tried talking to the bird. He quickly realized the bird would not awnser him and got very upset the bird was "ignoring him". I spent a good 10 minutes trying not to laugh at how completely offended this 3 year old was and had to promise that the bird wasn't actually ignoring him.
Another story was when I was watching a 12 year old girl recently, she didn't have any sisters so she was very excited to have a proper sleepover which included facemasks, putting my hair in rollers all by herself, doing our makeup and she got to paint my nails. Which I was sporting some lovely bright pink, orange and yellow nails for a while, she was very proud of herself. It was more fun then any sleepover I had at her age.
