Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I live with two children aged 5 and 7, and have cared for the infants of family members. I also volunteered as a childcare worker for the 2-3 year olds at Destination Church.

The most important part about being a nanny...
I believe the most important part of being a nanny is being someone who can be trusted. Someone the child is comfortable around, and someone the parents don't have to worry about. Especially if it's over a long period of time, I think the children should be as excited as the parents to see their nanny come. I'd like to think most nannies have a positive impact and are great role models for them. We should relieve stress rather than becoming the source of it. :)
My experience with special needs children...
I currently live with an autistic sister, and have experience with several things she may occasionally have issues with. I have also been with children in wheelchairs, and many who were non-verbal, although it wasn't often, but they're just as pleasant and fun to be around as anyone else!
The most important part about being a nanny...
I went to a park with my sisters and a couple kids from down the street, and ended up spinning a 4 year old on something I can only describe as an oval shaped "spinny thing" that made an agitating noise so loud, you could hear it from blocks away. After a couple minutes, she stopped, looked at me and said, "Your turn!" I didn't think she actually meant it until she hopped off and stared until I got on. Someway somehow she got it moving, and l ended up being spun by a kid I'm thrice the size of.
2 minutes later, a boy around 5 got me to hold his "gun" and chased me around the park in a pretty heated game of tag (I did lose the game as well as my dignity but I digress....) He then fed me wooden pellets arranged as a "burger" along with one of my sisters, and proceeded to lecture me on my "horrible" handling of his weapon and promised to teach the correct way to hold it the next time he sees me.
