More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I have had the pleasure of working in both a home daycare environment as well as being a paraprofessional for special needs children.
My mother ran a home daycare watching children from infants to, on occasion, middle school age. I would help prepare meals, develop lesson plans, engage in play time, help potty train & supervise when taking them on field trips.
I make it my personal goal to spend time with each child to find their likes, dislikes, what interests them in order to better apply that to what they may be learning or trying to learn, such as a skill or subject that may seem daunting.
I am constantly trying to find new, fresh, fun, and mentally stimulating activities for children of all ages, but with a focus that is more customized to their needs or interests.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Light exercises, arts/crafts, gardening, and creating snacks/preparing meals. Just like adults, children need to stretch as part of an equal balance from mental exercising (schoolwork/learning plans/chores). Of course, age appropriate! I have found that children are more productive when they take breaks to stretch/light exercise.
As I do enjoy cooking and baking, I would get the children involved in decorating cookies or showing them how to make fun, nutritional, and creative snacks. When we do these fun activities, they sometimes can learn something new about themselves as well as finding self gratification in what they just created.

The most important part about being a nanny...
Certainly their emotional well-being! I have found that too many times, children were mostly focused on schoolwork or video games and not so much on how they're feeling or if there is something weighing them down that they do not feel compelled to talk about.
Once trust is earned, that is when real, honest discussions happen. Then again, sometimes, they just need someone that is unbiased to just listen to them.

My experience with special needs children...
My experience with special needs children came when I applied at a local public school in Ohio as a substitute teacher and I was hired as a paraprofessional.
I have experience with catheters, leg braces, light bathing, incontinence issues, and non-verbal children.
I found that working with special needs children (all with various developmental issues), was fulfilling as I took the time to read each and every one of their files and then, research more in-depth on how best to explain/show each child so that they may learn, process, and retain the information. This is critical as not only do we want the children to learn and sustain new information, but also build their confidence so that they can be more self sufficient.

The most important part about being a nanny...
When I worked with special needs children, a school dance was coming up, so I asked one of the boys with severe neurological disorders if he would like to be my date and he replied "eeewww, no you're so old!". I guess he thought I would cramp his style!
