Trust. If the parents don't have trust, then the child won't have trust, and vice versa.
My experience with special needs children...
In both of my previous jobs I was frequently tasked with teaching or assisting individuals with challenges. But I don't see it as a challenge, rather, it's a different perspective.
When I worked at the childcare center at LMC, I had a girl who was very attached to her mom and would cry her heart out when she would leave and she wouldn't stop until she saw her again. I decided to see if I could do anything, but she was non-verbal, so I had to think outside the box. I had remembered the only times she wasn't crying was when we were singing; so, every morning I would pick her up and sing the ABCs until she was happy. She became attached to me after a certain point because when I would leave to go to my class, she would start crying and shaking the baby gate.

The most important part about being a nanny...
At the water park, swim lessons were 2 weeks long and would end on a Friday. The children knew that day was a fun day, so most were excited to not have to do laps or arm movements. But on this particular fun day, I was tasked with "entertaining" the preschool and learn-to-swim classes, so entertain I did. I spent the next 45 minutes walking around splashing kids like Godzilla. By the end, I had almost 30 kids chasing me in the pool, trying to "catch the teacher". They never did.
My favorite part was when several parents thanked me for "making the lessons fun." It's my job to make lessons engaging so that students remember the curriculum.
