My experience with special needs children...
I babysat for a family in my parish with an ASD son. He had sensory issues, special interests, and social-emotional differences. Working with this family really helped me to understand that every child’s needs are different, especially considering he had two siblings I also took care of. This job taught me how to care for three very different kids and balance their needs.
The most important part about being a nanny...
These two siblings I babysat in middle school were complete opposites. The little sister always wanted to play house, dolls, etc. The older brother, he was about six years old at the time, was all about sports and excitement. The challenge for me was that neither of them would play by themselves. The sister wanted to play pretend with me and the brother wanted to play catch. Sports being more my speed at the time, I prompted the sister, “how about we play pretend high school, and we’re all at [brother]’s football game?” I honestly can’t believe they both went for it! The sister actually ended up commentating our game of catch with a pretend microphone, and for the first time, they were getting along!
