I have volunteered at numerous kid's camps, in church children's care, and I used to tutor first graders as well. I have worked with all ages from newborns to pre-teens.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I am a person who is loaded with games. I love teaching kids board games, card games, outdoor games (when the weather will actually cooperate), and giving them riddles. Aside from that, I am down to do whatever the kids want to do. I will color with them, have a nerf war, or do anything else. I tend to prefer to try to keep kids off of their devices and get them to enjoy other things as well.
The most important part about being a nanny...
The most important parts of being a nanny are having a connection with the kids and having a healthy balance between being their friend and being their authority. Anyone can give "because I said so" demands to a kid, but for them to really respect you they have to also like you and enjoy being around you. The first thing I do with kids is establish a personal connection, then if there comes a time for discipline, what I say to them actually matters and they want to do what I ask of them.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I have many sweet moments with kids, but the first one that comes to mind is a girl at a camp I volunteered for. At the beginning of the week, she was really quiet, kind of grumpy, and didn't really seem to want to be there. She would sit out in activities and wander off in hikes. I kept trying to make conversation with her throughout the first few days, and she started to sort of warm up. On the third day, I asked her about her My Little Pony on her backpack, and that was apparently the right question to ask. She smiled and started telling me about it and I didn't have to fish for questions anymore. She slowly got more social with the other kids and by the end of the week, she was beaming with joy. On the last day, she gave me a drawing of her house and her family and told me that she would see me next year. I am so proud to have been able to have connected with her when she seemed to not want to engage with anyone at first.
