Activities I enjoy doing with children...
My answer varies depending on the age and interests of the individual. I plan messy activities like crafts or science with all ages, and can adapt sports and board game, card games and other games for many ages as well. (For hide and seek, I take a toy and hide that rather than encouraging a small child to hide. )I love reading aloud, and telling stories through felt board or puppets., and encouraging my listener to help me tell the story. Libraries play a big part in my day. I find baking to be fun with all ages.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I am not there to change the household. I am there so that the parent can feel confident going to wok, which means they know the child is safe, and happy too.
My experience with special needs children...
I have worked as a Respite Care provider for The Arc(then known as SNCARC) and I am currently a PCA for a teenage boy/young man with Duchenne’s Dystrophy.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I find this one too hard to answer. I have too many. I have kept in touch with my former families and feel blessed with the experiences that I have had and relationships I have made.
I do have a favorite interviewing moment though.
I made it to the second interview with a family. I arrived for the follow up interview and as I pulled in front of the house I could hear what sounded like screaming. The mother answers the front door holding the newborn baby with a bottle looking frazzled and the screaming child is behind her. She had picked up an elaborate Lego assemblage by the top section and 300 of the 1000 pieces had scattered across the downstairs area. The child and I scoured the floor and found every last piece. Yes, I got the position!
