I have worked with children with special needs, ages infancy to young adults. Not only did I teach life skills, but also taught creative art, photography, painting, pottery, and natural art experiences.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I had been nannying for a family for over a year; I could tell mom felt like she was missing out on hugs, snuggling, and just smelling her baby boy. During a week of him teething pretty terrible, he would cry until he fell asleep on me. Because mom was working from home, I texted her to come in and tag me out so she could have time with baby boy. The look on her face when she came in to take my place with baby boy is one I will never forget. Later we both cried and hugged. I understood as a momma what she was going through.

Hi, my name is Makaile Bishop and I am a recent graduate of UT at Austin. I graduated in 2021 with a degree in theatre, so I love acting, performing, and watching performances. I've been a counselor for special needs in the summer, where I've had to take care of those in wheelchairs for extended periods of time, I watched their food intake and fed them when needed, I helped them take care of their hygiene routine (showers, bathroom, teeth brushing, etc.) and I kept them engaged throughout the day doing different activities. The people I've taken care of range from about 14 all the way to someone 30 years old with cerebral palsy. Along with confidence in my responsible caretaking ability, I can be a very fun caretaker! I enjoy cartoons, drawing, and most of the things you'd expect a child to enjoy. So, it shouldn't be a problem to keep children entertained.
