A little bit about me

Hi! I’m Eleana. I’m from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I’m studying marketing and computer science. I currently live in Grand Rapids with my niece and nephew who are 3 and 8. I absolutely love children and I’m experienced in handling arguments between children, pet care, cooking simple nutritious meals, cleaning/preventing messes, and infant care.

I currently work for a local nonprofit, helping with their website and other marketing tasks. I’m looking to get an additional part time job so I can move into my own place, take classes, and get a dog!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I’ve worked at MOPS (Mothers Of PreSchoolers), leading games, crafts and snacks for 1-4 year olds. I have also helped in Sunday school as well as the nursery in my church. I currently live with my niece and nephew so I will often look after them while their parents are out. Most recently, I helped lead crafts for Vacation Bible School at my church for ages 4-12.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I enjoy learning what children are passionate about and helping them express themselves creatively in a hands on way. For instance, my nephew loves Minecraft, but has limited screen time. One afternoon, I printed out a Minecraft themed fold-up paper craft, which we had a blast coloring and building over the course of several afternoons, while the desire to look at screens was forgotten.

I typically enjoy leaning into the individual child’s interests and seeing their eyes light up when they learn something new, rather than one specific activity. However, One activity I’ve enjoyed with my niece and nephew is playing “tea shop”. Their parents are teaching them about economics, and we’ve had a lot of fun “buying and selling” crackers and lemonade.

Something I think is really important is being holistic on all accounts.

For parents: Parents have their own sets of rules and I believe respecting them is very important to children’s well being as well as mutual trust.

For children: I recognize that children are not one-size-fits-all. Something that helps one child thrive, may be problematic for another.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I don’t know if I can choose one favorite moment, but I find so much joy in the small moments. Like when a five year old says “it’s been really nice chatting with you” or coming home to my niece and nephew lined up with toy swords, ready to attack when I walk through the door.
