My experience with special needs children...
I was a CNA for one year and worked with a boy who had almost full paralysis. Using chair lifts, bathing, feeding, medications, etc. I assisted with helping this particular boy communicate as he was nonverbal and used alot of facial cues, grunting and other sounds to determine how he is feeling about certain things.
