I think it's important to be creative, imaginative and compassionate. Also i feel you need to be patient. It brings brings me joy to receive positive responses and appreciation from a child. I really enjoy working with children as their simple approach to everyday life intrigues me and offers me a chance to learn from them.
My experience with special needs children...
I have cared for an infant who had down syndrome. I would take to special classes. I also had special instructions on how to do certain things like play and education. Occupational therapy and speech/feeding therapy.

I loved when I taught one of my toddlers how to say 50 spanish words he memorized and translated into english.
