A little bit about me

I have mental disabilities myself (ADHD, MDD, SAD), so I can empathize with special needs children; it’s significant to always be patient about understanding their unique personalities, paying attention to repetitive patterns of the day that soothe them, and speaking out for little ones who either can’t talk for themselves or may have anxiety about approaching anyone for help. I have no problem working hard, I really enjoy caring for children in general: whether it’s making bathe time feel safe and predictable, providing a nutritious home cooked meal for the child regardless of how picky they are, or assisting them in dress/finding the right textured clothing for preventing sensory overload while accounting for preference.

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I took care of my younger brother, who is autistic. He has very specific food preferences but I had no problem with providing a safe, predictable schedule for the textures he likes and knowing which ones to stay away from. Keeping his mind sharp by helping him get his homework done from a credit building school, I acknowledge his frustration in not being able to understand certain wording or the expectations of his teachers. We as adults need to make accommodations for their sensory needs such as comfortable hair styles, bird baths, adjusting clothing textures if needed. I found myself speaking out for him whenever he was nonverbal, and giving comfort whether it was through: dimming the lights, lowering the volume of the noises that seem to be irritating, and using stimulation toys to focus on one thing at a time.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

As for indoor activities, I particularly enjoy assisting children in their learning process as they develop. Whether it’s a simple alphabetical order/math problems/understanding verbal questions, I seek to help them grow and comprehend words easier by solving those equations together. Outdoor activities can be a wonderful outlet! Whether it’s soccer, football, tennis, or even basketball I have no protest at all because children need not only social interaction but a friend they can trust.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Is communication with not only the parent(s) and/or guardian to maintain their standards for adequate child care, but also make sure the child knows that I want to be there for them only because of the money but because they deserve respect and love like any other average person. Special needs children especially need to know how treasured they are.
