Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
My niece is five years younger than me. Since she was born (almost thirteen years ago how the time flies!!), I’ve been her best friend and babysitter. She demands attention like no child I’ve known and the adults around her never give her enough patience, but I do my very best to listen to and indulge her while also encouraging her to be more independent.
My niece and nephew on the other side of my family are younger, and I’ve been babysitting them since they were 2 and 3 years old. They’re 5 and 6 now (agh!!), and I adore taking care of them. It’s very important to me to engage in appropriate play-based activities and get “on the level” of the little ones while still being a firm adult presence, even though it can be tiring, and I never yell no matter how much they do. I take them to the bathroom, prepare them meals, administer asthma medication, and give them activities.

Taking care of children while giving them space to grow and be themselves. Children shouldn’t feel less than the adults that they’re around, and should be guided, not ordered.
Patience and emotional regulation are also incredibly important, because kids mirror what they see around them, and they need good emotional role models.

My experience with special needs children...
My niece is developmentally disabled, and I’ve babysat her since she was born. She isn’t a high-needs individual, and is not medically complex save for epilepsy, but she has developmental delay and some behavioral issues that need navigating during care. I’ve also coached children with down syndrome in my time as a gymnastics coach.
