I currently am an after school care teacher for ages 3-13 and also substitute in preschool classes on necessary days. I have babysitting experience as well.

The most important part about being a nanny...
Treating children with respect while also understanding that they are still children. It can be easy as adults to underestimate children but when you get to know them you understand how smart and wise they are beyond what some people can see, this being said they still do not fully understand how to regulate emotions and such, so it is also important to be patient with them as they have very big feelings that they don’t always know what to do with. Also: having fun! Allowing yourself to be a kid with them, do the silly dances and sing the songs and play pretend!

The most important part about being a nanny...
One of my favorite moments with a junior kindergartener happened a few months ago, I had a child who wanted to learn how to draw hearts and was struggling with it so I taught her to start by making a v and then drawing a m on top of it. She was unsure at first but after she got the hang of it she started drawing hearts all of the time (and still does) and about a week after that first day she came up to me with a paper full of hearts and said “this is for you Ms. Grace, it’s hearts!! Just like how you taught me!” And that resonated with me as I realized I had taught her something and she had taken it to heart! I still get proud when I see her draw hearts just the way I taught her :).
