Creating a predictable, familiar, and consistant environment for a child. It is important they feel that you are not just there as a worker, but as their friend and companion. It is also important to have stability and confidence to keep everybody calm and knowing that if things go wrong, they have somebody that is going to be their rock.
My experience with special needs children...
I have not yet cared for any special needs children in a paid setting. I grew up with a sibling who has special needs so I do however understand the complexity and patience required to care for a child that has special needs. I would help do her daily exercises and find work arounds to make less accessible forms of play more realistic but still just as fun.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I loved doing elf on the shelf for the child I was working with for a while. It brought a warmth to my heart seeing Christmas magic work its magic in the home. Small things like that are important to me.
