My experience with special needs children...
When I was a Recreation Leader, I had a brother and a sister in my group who had Autism, among other disorders. The brother had a special needs counselor; I had to work with them to help accommodate his needs within the group and help him feel and be included. The sister did not have a special needs counselor. She had a habit of wandering off and, overall, just not being very interested in what everyone else was doing most of the time. So to accommodate that, I encouraged her to play the games, and I modified some of the activities to keep her engaged. I also allowed her to do her own thing when she needed it. If that meant she could color with chalk on the sidewalk while everyone else was playing basketball, etc. I allowed for that because her needs will at times be different than my other kids.
