Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I always try to get outside with the kids and play various games or sports; it's fun, healthy, and makes for an easier bedtime. I always try to create a fun environment and engage in pretend play, usually child led, with redirection when needed. Whatever they feel like doing I will always try to make it happen; whether it's nerf wars, dress-up, the floor is lava, cars, building tents, arts & crafts, board games, etc. I love the imagination of a child and seeing how their minds can create anything.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Establishing trust with the family, both children and parents. You're a role model whose job is to inspire them to be their best and to make them feel they are loved. Always follow the 'Golden Rule' in life.
My experience with special needs children...
I am a Registered Behavioral Therapist currently working with children who have Autism. I have experience working with a variety of different special needs children from Autism, Sensory Behavioral, Asperger's, Anger Management, O.D.D., O.C.D., A.D.D., A.D.H.D., and some undetermined cases. The last school I worked for was 60% foster care, so I have also worked with children who have had emotional trauma and environmental challenges as well. Knowing about a child's home life and what they have been through gives me a better understanding and helps me adjust the way I need to pair with them to establish that connection and trust.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My heart always melts when my kid(s) don't want me to leave. It just makes me feel so loved and accomplished that I'm doing my job right.
