More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I took care of my cousin from his birth until he was 7 and continued to babysit for him on and off until he could take care of himself. I also worked in a medical surgical unit devoted to infectious diseases and we were the only unit with beds devoted to pediatric patients during my master's degree. I am also a mother of a 7-month-old for whom I have been caring on my own while my husband works since his birth. I also have experience volunteering at a women's shelter taking care of children for an hour here and there so that their mothers can attend to their affairs. I also have a lot of teaching experience of both young adults and non-traditional students.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Story time, interactive stories, singing, playing the steel drums, tummy time, flash cards, homework, going for nature walks and learning about plants and animals. I have found that kids love story time just as much as movies! I remember with my cousin even when he was 11 years old, he still loved being read the Christmas Carol just as much as he loved to watch it and it was much more interactive and fun for me to read with him and do the voices. When they are older, I love to play games like cards and invent board games that engage what they are learning in school. I am, after all, a teacher at heart. :)
The most important part about being a nanny...
Childhood can be such a difficult time to experience. There is so much to learn and being small, people can often overlook your preferences, desires, and needs when you are just learning to communicate. For me, it is an honor to be a part of their world and to help them grow up but the most important thing is to help them develop a sense of self and agency by giving them choices, helping them voice their needs, and overall just listening to them and being present for them. When children feel safe and heard they can enjoy exploring the world!
My experience with special needs children...
I have only experiences working with special needs in a long-term care or hospital setting. I find when working with anyone, it's best to just listen and meet the person where they are at. By listening to the caregivers about what works and what doesn't and then listening to the person, I usually can get a good feel for how to work with the person. I have read that many of the Montessori activities I do with my son--exposing the person to different sensory experiences, allowing them to try things and explore them at their own pace first--were originally developed for neurodivergent children and are highly effective when working with them.
The most important part about being a nanny...
It is difficult to choose just one moment. Taking care of children when they are healthy and happy is so calm and fun to just connect, watch them laugh, and it's amazing to witness them explore the world for the first time. When they aren't feeling great, it's empowering to solve the challenge and find the strength to help them through it. Little moments when my baby lights up and says, "Mama" and when people I care for have gotten better or my students have clearly progressed in their learning brings me incredible joy and pride. There is nothing for which I am more grateful in life than the thrill of watching people grow, improve, and heal.
