More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
After graduating from college, I went to work at a preschool as a teacher. I was assigned to the classroom for 2.5 - 3.5 year olds. Together with my co-teacher, I led the children in activities such as crafts and fun with shaving cream and food dye to see what colors are made when we mix primary colors. Additionally, I personally lead circle time every day. I read the children books, usually choosing which ones based on a pre-selected theme such as "kindness," "nature," or "gratitude." We sang songs and danced as well before going outside to play.
One of the books we read every day was "The Color Monster" by Anna Llenas. Using this book about emotions, I was able to coach a young child through a tantrum and teach him how to take deep breaths to calm down. I employ empathy as a teaching tool to show the kids how their actions impact others and the classroom as a whole, and I have noticed that several of my students stoped hitting and otherwise acting out so often after these lessons.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I enjoy reading to children and discussing some of the themes of books we just read. I also love to be outside with children in my care because we can play, explore, and learn about our world. I love talking about the clouds, moon, and stars and teaching children names of cloud types and moon phases. I am learning more about constellations and would love to share that journey with a young mind.
Art time is important and enjoyable for me. Seeing the amazing things children can create at young ages never ceases to amaze me. I saw an older student draw an excellent Clone Trooper from Star Wars once, and he went on to recreate the entire "Attack of the Clones" movie in his own homemade book. This took me back to my childhood and the books I wrote and illustrated, and I was left deeply emotional by this. It was just so awesome!

The most important part about being a nanny...
Knowing how to set and enforce firm but gentle boundaries is important because it teaches the kids to respect the boundaries of others and encourages them to set their own. It opens up conversation about why it is important to respect other people's space, bodies, and/or time.
My experience with special needs children...
I feel it is important to note that I have not been specially trained to care for children with special needs, but I do have experience working with and caring for children with special needs. Plus, I will be seeking a formal training and certificate starting this fall.
My classroom at the preschool had multiple special needs children enrolled at a time, and I was the teacher most of them came to when they needed something. I helped with eating assistance, diaper changes, and occasional behavioral modification when a specially trained aide was not in the room.

The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite moment during the average school day is when we get to go to the playground and use our imaginations to create whatever game we want. It’s crazy what some of these kids cook up, and it’s always so much fun playing their games!
