The most important part about being a nanny...
I feel the most important part of caring for any child is to be mindful of the importance and impact the first five years of a child’s life has on their development. It’s not a cookie-cutter situation because every child is unique in how they process the world around them and how they communicate those experiences. It’s our job to identify their unique needs and preferences and build an environment where they feel safe, seen and heard and empower them to become the best versions of themselves.
My experience with special needs children...
The special considerations children that I’ve had the fortune of knowing/caring for were amazing. My experience has been predominantly with gifted/twice exceptional, ADHD and high functioning spectrum.
The most important part about being a nanny...
There have been many. There’s something special about witnessing the excitement in a child’s eyes when they hit milestones or discover something new that excites them. I guess if I had to choose one moment though it would be the time I truly connected with a child that struggled to navigate emotional overwhelm. He would have meltdowns and his pediatrician advised his parents to let him self soothe. I initially tried to align with what the parents were advised to do as to be consistent but it didn’t feel right and didn’t seem to be the best approach for this particular child so I tried something different and it was far more effective in communicating to the child that he was, first and foremost, safe. That moment changed the trajectory of our relationship and his meltdowns happened far less frequently.
