Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I often babysit my nephew (20 momths) for 2-6 hours when needed.
I have grown up around many children at my church, often taking care of various aged children when needed. I understand how to handle kids of many ages when they are acting up, or are sad.
Last year I participated in a school led program where for 1-2 hours one day a week I would go into a 2nd grade classroom to observe and help the students. I have learned a lot from this experience, and even spent a day with 1st graders. I learned that I do not become overwhelmed quickly by children, and have a lot of patience for "annoying" children.

The most important part about being a nanny...
I believe the most important part about being a nanny is helping the kids become successful. By setting good examples and teaching them wrong from right kids can learn many new things and progress into a happy and healthy adulthood.
My experience with special needs children...
I have not grown up very close to any special needs children. However I have been around several special needs adults and I understand how their minds function, and how to work with them.
I have not had a lot of first hand experience with special needs children, but I believe that I could learn quickly and would be able to stay calm under pressure.
