A little bit about me

I'm a self-employed, youthful and fit grandmother looking to supplement my income. I owned a daycare in Portland for several years and then became a nanny on the east coast to a family with 4 children - twins 6 months, a 3 year old and 5 year old. I worked 60 hour weeks as a live in until the twins were 4, when I moved back to the west coast to be near my new granddaughter, who is now in college. I also have a grandson in high school. I love kids, animals and nature, am known to burst into silly songs and make up goofy games. I'm also good at teaching how to be respectful to everyone. I'm a nature lover and take my 2 dogs on daily morning walks. I work from home for a magazine but have deadlines and need something that is either in the late afternoon and/or evenings or on weekends. I do have periods of time when I would be flexible to help during the weekdays. I was CPR and First Aid certified but that has lapsed. I would be happy to recertify both.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I owned an in-home daycare from 1994 to 2000. Was a live-in nanny to 4 kids from 2000 to 2004.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love doing arts and crafts, baking, nature walks, reading stories, building indoor forts and general play - dolls, trucks, board games, etc.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I love children and know that everyone is an individual. Part of being a good nanny (and parent) is to learn who this little human is, what makes them who they are and nurture what they're meant to be. Obviously, it can take some time to sort this out, but it's important to see the child as an individual little person and not to make them into what someone else might think they should be. Find their passion and help them learn how that works. And respect. Respect for everyone's feelings, life choices, disabilities, appearance, race, religion and quirkiness. You can't really know what's inside someone from what you see or hear on the outside. An angry outburst can come from feeling scared, jealous, hurt, inferior, being tired, hungry... It's the grown ups job to sort that out and help the child learn to get in touch with their feelings and find ways to express themselves in a more positive way.

My experience with special needs children...

I don't have any experience with special needs children other than I cared for a toddler who had heart and lung issues and I needed to be on alert for signs of an issue. I did have to call her mom on one occasion that required her to be hospitalized. I also babysat my grandson who had asthma which required inhalers and a nebulizer. I also cared for my father for 5 years and for 18 months he had a severe bleeding issue which required administering a topical medicine to stop the bleeding. It was stressful for both of us but
I am good under pressure.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I have had so many wonderful moments as a nanny, parent and grandparent to honestly pick which was my favorite. A funny one I remember was when a parent told me as she was dropping off her daughter that they had gone to a nice restaurant for dinner the night before and when they asked Ashley what she wanted she sang out, "Chick, chick, chicken." I was always silly with the kids and when we would have chicken for lunch I would say, "we're having chick, chick, chicken" and all the kids would join in.

Part-Time Child Care Provider Available in Salem, OR: Kellie B.

Hi there!(: I believe kids have so much to offer in this world and I would be honored to work with yours! A bit about myself: I attended the University of Mary Washington in Virginia with a double major in English and Communications (I'm working on finally earning my bachelor's degree and then on to my master's!) I am currently in the stages of getting my fall schedule figured out, but will update my profile when that is established. That being said, I have a passion for reading so I would love to instill that same passion in the kids I work with. I have 2 years of experience working in an elementary school in Salem; I had an absolute blast and learned so much. I also worked in a developmental classroom where I worked with kids that had Autism and Down Syndrome. Even with my experience, I would be more than willing to meet you where you're at in terms of parental philosophy. "While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about"
