As a patient coordinator, I see kids ages 5 and up, some with special needs, and keep the energy upbeat and emotions calm during exams, especially when parents hands are full.
I also have experience babysitting for relatives for many years, including driving to and from school, keeping them occupied for a few hours with some games, prepping and cooking meals, getting to bed on time, and more!

The most important part is to provide safety and security, and following the parents instructions for that safety. And of course, bringing a little joy into it as well. Being away from your guardians at a young age can be scary or frustrating for many kids! It’s important to be patient with them.

Many patients at my workplace come in overwhelmed, struggle to interpret instructions, etc, and some of my best skills are patience and understanding. I take my time to ensure they receive what they need.

One day while I was working with a very shy kid, he out of nowhere asked if I “had a secret laboratory underneath my house,” and after taking a moment to process that the quiet kid he is, said that, I responded leading the joke on. Now every time I see him he makes a joke about my supervillain activities.
