One of my favorite moments as a nanny was during a rainy afternoon when the little girl I was watching was feeling restless and disappointed that we couldn't go outside to the park like we had planned. To cheer her up, I suggested we build a “living room campground.” We made a big fort using blankets, couch cushions, and string lights, then brought in flashlights, stuffed animals, and snacks. We read books inside the fort and even made up our own campfire stories. By the end of the day, she was laughing, pretending to roast marshmallows, and saying it was the “best rainy day ever.” Moments like that remind me how powerful imagination can be, and how rewarding it is to turn an ordinary day into something magical.
