The most important part about being a nanny...
I believe that the most important part of being a nanny is making a difference in not only the kids' lives but the families as well. You are there as a support person and should be willing to assist in any way you can. The children, of course, are the number one priority, and it is crucial to build bonds, support, and care for each child in the most beneficial way for them. You want to be a role model, a shoulder to lean on, and most importantly, a safe place for the child to feel they can express themselves and be truly themselves when caring for them.
My experience with special needs children...
As a camp counselor of five years, I worked with a fair share of children who had special needs. I was assigned to assist kids with not only medical special needs such as Type-1 Diabetes but also children with intellectual special needs. I enjoyed working with these children, and you get to form a very close bond with them. You are their person for the time they are in your care. They look up to you, and you, in return, learn so much from them. Every child, no matter what their challenge might be, deserves the same treatment, respect, and opportunities as any other kid.
The most important part about being a nanny...
One of my favorite memories was watching a family with a five-year-old boy, a three-year-old girl, and a 1-year-old boy. They lived in Charlestown, MA (a particular part of Boston). The little boy and girl loved police and fire trucks. We walked all around the city block to find the fire station and then journeyed to find the police station. When we reached our second destination, we drew with chalk that I had brought outside on the sidewalks leading up to the station. The little boy wanted to write messages for the offices to see when they walked into the station. On our way back home, we saw a police car drive by. The kids were ecstatic and started waving. The nice police officer pulled over, went on his speaker, and talked to the kids through it. He turned on his lights for them and made their whole day overall! Seeing their faces light up with joy like that was something I will never forget.
