Aside from the obvious most important thing (keeping kids safe), I think the most important thing is making them feel understood. Children are just little human beings, who have a hard time expressing how they feel verbally sometimes. I try and make a conscious effort to make them feel heard.

One time, I was caring for a 6-year-old and we were on a walk through his yard after he finished his homework. After a few minutes he got really excited, pointed at the ground, and told me to come look because he found bird eggs! Once I got over there, I realized they were actually rabbit droppings. That excited him even more, and we stood around outside for a few minutes so he could look for the rabbit.
