More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I worked as an assistant teacher at childcare learning center. During this time, I cared for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. There was a set schedule for each classroom that consisted of age appropriate activities. I led circle time and story time, engaged in indoor and outdoor activities, worked on fine and gross motor skills, counting, free play, and much more. I I also worked as a nanny for several months for a family with children ages 1,2, and 4. In addition, I’ve spent summers as a teen camp counselor.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Playing outside, crafts, nursery rhymes, circle time, story time, dance parties.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Is to truly be passionate about what you do. You have to love, care for, and nurture the children as you would your own. You have to be attentive and engage with them consistently. It is important to be a positive role model as they look up to you. It is critical that we only teach and model great things because children’s brains are like sponges, soaking up all the information and things they see in their lives.
My experience with special needs children...
I cared for a sweet, 2 year old boy who was on the spectrum. It was in a classroom setting, a first time for me. I was nervous, I didn’t want to do the wrong thing and make him upset. I wanted to learn as much about his diagnosis as I could. Knowledge is power. Once I became familiar, I was more comfortable in myself and confident that I was providing the best care for him that I could. The biggest thing that I realized was that he was going to need more of my attention than the other children might. I learned that it was super important to constantly interact with him. To keep him engaged, but also observe him. I learned that it’s common for children with special needs to perceive sensory input in different ways and saw that he may be unable to verbalize his discomfort. I had to learn him, from his body language to his vocal outbursts. I had to look at his behaviors and figure out exactly what he was trying to express to me. That’s when I began to effectively communicate with him.
The most important part about being a nanny...
The first time that one of my kids said, “I love you, Ms. Nia.”
