A little bit about me

Hi! My name is Olivia and I am a 19 year-old student at Kent State University home for the summer! I lived in South Elgin for 18 years, went to school in St. Charles, and recently moved to Elgin- So I know the area pretty well! I love and have worked with kids for about five years now. Especially during the summer I enjoy being outdoors, but I also grew up loving crafts and baking. I recently (As of the beginning of April) had the Covid-19 virus. I have not been contagious for a week and will have the strongest antibodies to the virus for the next three months, at which time I plan to get the vaccine. I am comfortable and willing to wear a mask if it is to a family's preference!

The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important part of nannying and babysitting aside from the child's safety and wellbeing, is developing a relationship with the child(ren). It's going to be really difficult to have fun with, teach, and understand one another I don't take the time to get to know a child's personality and interests. Connection is key!

My experience with special needs children...

I watched an 8-year old girl with a variety of learning deficits as well as anger management problems 5 days a week for 9-10 months. Throughout this process at the age of only 16, I learned the problem-solving skills and patience that have led me to success in the latter babysitting and part-time nannying experiences. Whether it was temper tantrums that came with frustration over homework, or the process of learning how to listen to others, I faced a new challenge with her every day. In fact, she didn't like me much at first until I had the time to understand how to react to her issues. Once I did, we became very close and always had fun together.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One day while crafting, the 8 year-old I was watching popped open a brand new jar of glitter all over their newly redone kitchen. Her and I both cried for a few minutes until it became laughter for us both. I stepped aside to call her mom and explain what happened, and when I got back she had a dustpan in one hand, and a broom waiting for me to begin the cleanup of a very sparkly mess.
